Argentine

This type of Bahia is known to be low maintenance and great at taking on heat. If you’re looking for something that requires little work but still maintains a healthy appearance, Argentine is a great choice.

This type of grass also takes longer to germinate than other varieties so it’s not ideal if you’re growing it yourself or planning on getting your grass installed quickly. Another benefit of using Argentine Bahia is that it works well in both sunny and shady areas; however, in full shade conditions, it will still require some watering during dry periods.

This variety grows very quickly as well, usually reaching heights between 5-8 inches per month. Overall, Argentine has many benefits such as looking natural when maintained and requiring little maintenance from its owner.

Tifton 9

If you live in a part of Florida that gets a large amount of rain and you don’t want to be mowing your grass every week, look into getting Tifton 9. The reason it works so well in these environments is that it has thick rhizomes.

Rhizomes are roots that grow horizontally beneath your surface area instead of vertically like stolons do. The difference between stolons and rhizomes isn’t significant, but because Tifton 9 has rhizomes you will have less trouble with weeds trying to grow through your lawn.

Common

The most popular Bahia grass, common cultivars are a bit more hardy and tolerate urban conditions well. These grasses are often grown in large yards or parks where they receive lots of foot traffic.

This variety has a high salt tolerance, making it an excellent choice for sandy coastal soils that are too salty for most varieties of grass. This grass grows very tall very quickly and requires regular mowing and fertilization.

Common Bahia is drought-tolerant once established but needs consistent watering in its first year. It can be planted from either seed or sod. Obviously, we recommend hiring us as your sod installers for this project!

Pensacola

This type of Bahia grass has a bluish-green color and dense growth. It’s hardy and will tolerate areas with dry soil.

It also doesn’t need to be mowed often, but it requires more water than some other types of Bahia grass. For example, in hot weather, you might want to water your lawn two or three times a week, and in cooler weather about once a week.

In general, though, Pensacola can do well even with infrequent watering (especially if you are using an automatic sprinkler system). Like most types of Bahia grass, Pensacola will grow well in warm climates which makes it perfect for us here in Jacksonville.
